Third Somaliland Expedition Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Wellington, India, he served as a Captain in the 1st Bombay Grenadiers, Indian Army. On April 22, 1903, at Daratoleh, Africa, Captain Rolland was with four other men in the rearguard behind the rest of the column. When a fellow officer fell badly wounded, Captain Rolland ran back some 500 yards to get help while the others stayed with the casualty. Endeavoring to keep off the enemy who were all round him, he succeeded in getting to officer in charge of the column for assistance. Returning they managed to get the wounded man on to a camel. For most conspicuous gallantry, he was promoted Major and awarded the Victoria Cross on October 6, 1903. Later serving as Adjutant of the Nagpur Volunteer Rifles in Nagpur, India, he died from a fall at age 41.
