The son of George Ulmer Briggs, Sr. and Emeline McKenney, George Briggs left Maine for Mendocino County, California sometime in the late 1860s. His stay in California was short as he registered a cattle brand in Millard County, Utah in 1872. The following year, 1873, he married Mary Elizabeth Oakley. To this union were born four sons; Dom Pedro Briggs (1877-1944), Charles Quincy Briggs (1879-1969), George Ulmer Briggs (1881-1967) and William Briggs (1884-1885). This marriage ended in divorce in 1888. It is unknown where George Briggs spent most of the 1890s but by 1899 he is found listed in the Denver Directory as a grocer and in the 1907 Denver Directory as the owner of the Denver Crisp Company.
