SMITH ANDREWS, Mary Phyllis
Mary Phyllis Smith Andrews, a 47 year Palmdale resident, died in Glendale, Arizona Sept. 10, 2005. Mary moved to Youngtown, Ariz., in May. She is survived by daughters Barbara Mead and her husband Bill of Oregon and Deborah Smith of Agoura Hills, Calif.; son Chuck of Youngtown, daughter-in-law Dianna Garcia-Smith of Phoenix; stepson James of San Diego; grandchildren Aprill, Brian, Leslie, Julia, Nathan, Jennifer and Janelle; great grandchildren Brian, Jr., Bradley and Jonathan. She is also survived by many nephews and nieces, Edwin Worthley of Youngtown and close friends in Antelope Valley. Born in Los Angeles on Sept. 24, 1921, to Stephano and Lucia Mauro, Mary was one of 8 children. Her Italian immigrant parents and all of her brothers and sisters preceded her in
death. Mary attended school in LosAngeles and married her sweetheart and next-door neighbor of 10 years, Chuck, on Dec. 12, 1941. They moved to Palmdale in 1954, when Chuck transferred with Northrop Corp. They traveled frequently to Western Europe and Asia with Chuck's work. Chuck died in Palmdale in 1990. A few years later Mary reacquainted herself with one of Chuck's co-workers at Northrop and married Jim Andrews in Oct. of 1997, aboard the USS Riverside in Laughlin, Nev. They traveled, gardened and were active in the Elk's Lodge in Palmdale. James died suddenly in 2000, as he and Mary were completing a vacation in Switzerland. Mary was best known for her friendly, outgoing manner, cookies and pies and knitted slippers, afghans and other handcrafted items. She worked for the Spudnut Shop in Palmdale and retired as a baker from the Palmdale Elementary School District. A gathering of friends and family will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2005, from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m., at Chapel of the Valley Mortuary at 1755 E. Ave. R. Palmdale. A graveside service and burial will follow at Desert Lawn Memorial Park.
