Erma was born September 8, 1904, in Russell County, Virginia, the daughter of Henry C, and Sally Powers Francisco. She attended Temple Hill High School in Russell County and Emory and Henry College, Emory, Virginia.

Erma and Arthur S, Clear met while attending Emory and Henry College and were married on May 14, 1928. They had three sons, Robert, Sidney and David, six grandsons, one great-grandson and five great-granddaughters.

Prior to her marriage she taught in the elementary grades at Heralds Valley School, in Russell County, VA. After her marriage, in addition to supporting Arthur in his ministry, she also taught in the elementary grades at Wallace, VA, Fall Branch and Oak Glenn in Washington County, TN.

After Arthur's retirement after 43 years in the Holston Conference and following his service at Ooltewah, TN. They bought a home and moved to Kingsport, TN, to be closer to the family. In 1981 they moved to Asbury Acres Retirement Center in Maryville, TN. Erma remained at Asbury Acres following Arthur's death on December 28, 1984 until November 14, 1997 when she moved to the Health Center at Asbury Center at Baysmont, in Kingsport, and lived there until her death on November 18, 1997. The Reverend Spurgeon McCartt conducted the funeral service at the Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home in Kingsport. Erma was buried with her husband in the Oak Hill Cemetery.
