Jan was born January 13, 1940 to Willie Garland and Edna Russell Barnette. She graduated from Cotton Valley High School, Louisiana Tech University, where she earned a BA degree in Education, Louisiana State University, M.Ed., and Louisiana State University –Shreveport, Master Plus 30 Degree. She was a classroom teacher for many years at Midway Junior High, Woodlawn High, Eden Gardens Junior High and Ridgewood Middle Schools. She retired in 1998 as the Assistant Principal for Instruction at Linwood Middle School.
She was active in the Auditorium Class at Cypress Baptist Church after moving to Benton in 2005. Prior to that she was an active member of the Pastor's Class at Calvary Baptist Church. She loved gardening, completing the Northwest Louisiana Master Gardener's Program, cooking, sewing, relaxing at the lake, and spending time with her family. She was also blessed with an incredible gift of creative decorating.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Herbert Vann Greene and sister-in-law, Marla Sue Churchman. She is survived by her daughter, Kelly Greene-Byram and husband, Kelly of Shreveport, LA; son, Hunter Greene and wife, Emily of Baton Rouge, LA; son, Jade Greene and wife, Joni of Lebanon, TN; grandchildren, Cameron, Kendall and Cade Byram, Ashley, Matthew and Lauren Greene and Amanda and David Greene; twin brother, Jon Barnette and wife, Mary Ann of Orange, TX; brothers-in-law, Willie Joe Greene and wife, Collette, Donald Greene and wife, Sue and James Churchman as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.
The family expresses thanks to the staff, nurses and doctors of Willis-Knighton Medical Center, 2nd floor North for their loving care and to so many wonderful friends for their love and support during this time.
Honoring Jan as pallbearers will be her grandsons, Cameron, Matthew, Cade, David and Jon Barnette, Willie Joe Greene and Bill Hoolahan. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Donald Greene and Billy Grisham.
