Gene Rayburn Hammonds, age 79, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at Lexington VA Medical Center - Leestown Division.
Services for Mr. Hammonds will be 1 p.m. Monday, September 23, 2013, at Harrod Brothers Funeral Home with Dr. Michael Hail officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in Midway Cemetery. Visitation is at the funeral home Sunday from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.
He was born in Lexington, KY, on July 14, 1934, to Russell B. and Bertha Collins Hammonds. He was a veteran of the US Army serving during the Korean War. For many years, he has been the Service Officer for American Legion Post 7. Mr. Hammonds was a member of Crestwood Baptist Church.
Mr. Hammonds is survived by four sons, Jeffrey Eugene Hammonds (Robin), Ohio, Hans Tessman (Donna), Kansas, Jeff S. Hammonds, Frankfort, and Gene R. Hammonds II, Frankfort; daughter, Alisa A. Hammonds, Frankfort; five grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jim and Delbert Hammonds and sister, June Schepp.
