DENDRON - Lena Virginia Appel James, 86, passed away Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005. Lena was a native and lifelong resident of Surry County, Va. She was the daughter of the late Anton Norman and Cora Lee Nunally Appel. Lena will be remembered for her loving and caring spirit, crocheting and then donating lapcovers and afghans to newborns to convalescents. She worked for some time in the Surry County Public School lunchroom. Lena was a homemaker and cherished the days of working alongside her husband, the late Eddie Thomas James, painting and doing small household repairs. Lena was an avid frog collector and enthusiast. She was a life-member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church and attended Moore's Swamp Baptist Church. In addition to her husband of 65 years, Eddie, and her parents, Lena was preceded in death by a granddaughter, three sisters, four brothers and a daughter-in-law. She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Salinda Bulls and her husband, Ray, of Elberon; three sons, Norman James Sr. and his wife, Linda, of Tennessee, Milton M. James and his wife, Liz, of Smithfield and Billy James of Delaware; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, in Moore's Swamp Baptist Church with the Rev. Ray Rowland and the Rev. Don Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family suggests memorials take the form of contributions to Surry Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 188, Surry, VA 23883. Arrangements are in the care of Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield.
