Director. The first Swede ever to win an Oscar; 1949 for his documentary "Människor i stad" ("Symphony of a City"). Other noted films from his long career are "Det stora äventret" (The Great Adventure, 1953), that was awarded "Best Film" in Cannes, "Pojken i trädet" (The Boy In the Tree, 1961) and "Mitt hem är Copacabana" (My Home is Copacabana, 1965). For many years he lived and worked in the province of Pantanal in Brazil, where he became much involved in the struggle against ruthless exploitation, and achieved several improvements for the region.
