Edgar married Martha G. Cline on February 23, 1854 in Burlington. Their daughter, Jennie, was born about 1857 in New York state.

According to the obituary published in the Burlington Weekly Free Press, May 25, 1905 Edgar was one of the first people in Burlington to learn the craft of telegraphy. He worked in St. Johns, Province of Quebec and Milkwauke. During the Civil War, Edgar served with the US Military Telegraph Corps; as a 1st Lieutenant in the New York Militia, and in US Army from 1862 to 1865. His obituary states he was twice taken prisoner "...passing through many exciting experiences."

After the War, Edgar worked for Western Union until about 1894, when he moved to Burlington. His obituary states he lived in New York during this time; US Census records of 1870 and 1880 show the family living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin).

He lived with his uncle, Lemuel S. Drew on Shelburne Road in South Burlington. Edgar's daughter, Jennie Atwater Ladd lived in Milwauke at the time of his death; his brother Henry H. was living in Brooklyn.
