IRA A. SCOTT DEAD

Police chief Ira A. Scott was found dead in his bed at the hone of his niece, Mrs. S. A. Monroe, 1005 Neosho Street, yesterday morning. A physician ascribed the death to apoplexy. Mr. Scott retired at his usual hour, and was heard to get up the fore part of the night by members of the family. When he was called at 8:20 yesterday morning, there was no response, and he was recovered lying in a natural position with no signs of a struggle. He had been dead for several hours.

Mr. Scott had lived in Emporia for the last fourteen years, and was known as a man of quiet tastes and placid temperament. As (sic) the time he came to this town, he had given up active work in his business of contracting and building, and settled down for a period of rest. Two years ago he was persuaded to take the appointment of police judge, and he filled this office capably. He was most faithful in observing its duties, and showed conscientious zeal in making judgments of the court. His records for collection of fines probably exceed those of any judge who ever held the office.

He was 72 years old August 29. He was born in Ohio, and spent his youth there. When the Civil War opened, he enlisted as a private in Company L Second Regiment Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, October 10, 1862. He was discharged October 12, 1865, as orderly sergeant.

He was captured during the war and underwent one of the bitterest experiences of a northern soldier--imprisonment in the Libby and Andersonville prisons. He spent eight months in the latter prison, where he shared the general experience of the captives. At the close of the war, he returned to his home, and later went to Minnesota. His active life was spent there, and in Washington and Texas, where he followed his business. Following the death of Mrs. Scott, he was married a second time. The interment will be in Maplewood cemetery, beside the body of the second Mrs. Scott. Mr. Scott was a Mason, a member of the First Methodist Church, and a member of the Plumb Post No. 55, G.A.R. At the meeting of the post Saturday, a few hours before his death, he was installed patriotic instructor.

Three daughters, two brothers and a sister survive Mr. Scott. The daughters are Mrs. Mary McClure, of Waynesville, Ohio; Mrs. Nettie Chidlaw, of Grand Forks, N. Dak.; and Mrs. Faye Porter, of Santa Ana, Calif. The brothers are S. M. Scott, of Edna, Texas; C. A. Scott, of Chicago; the sister is Mrs. Hannah Nichols, of Dunlap.

The funeral services will probably be held Wednesday afternoon, but definite announcement will be made tomorrow.

AN APPRECIATION

Again we have been called upon to lay at rest one of our comrades, Judge Ira A. Scott who, at our last meeting was appointed and installed by our commander as patriotic instructor of this post. At that time he was probably the healthiest-looking and strongest-looking member of the post present. It seems almost like days of yore, when one moment the comrade at your side was laughing and smiling, and the next moment he was gasping out his last breath, stricken by the foe.

Comrade Scott was a gallant soldier, and an equally gallant citizen and Christian gentleman. His loss will not alone be felt by the members of this post, but the entire city will mourn with us and his loved ones.

In attestation of our love and esteem, it is hereby ordered that the charter of the post be draped for thirty days, and a copy of this memorial be furnished the family, that it be entered in the minutes of the Post, and that a copy be furnished the Daily Gazette.

W. J. Combs, W. H. Switzer, R. B. McGahey, Committee
