Richard Scott was the son of Richard Scott of Boxsted, Suffolk, England. Richard the son was probably born in Boxsted or Glemsford, Suffolk, about 1510. Richard the father was a yeoman, but Richard was the fourth son and became a clothier at Glemsford. A clothier was the middleman in the manufacture of woolen cloth, the principal industry of England at the time. A clothier would buy wool on the sheep, then pay to have the shearing, spinning and weaving done by others. He then arranged the sale of the finished product. He married Joanna about 1530. Her parentage is not known. They had nine children. Joanna "wife of Richard Scott" was buried in the churchyard of St. Mary the Virgin Church in Glemsford on August 23 1556.

Richard soon remarried, Johan, the widow of Christopher Tollerton. They had two children. Richard was buried in the churchyard of St. Mary the Virgin Church in Glemsford on February 5, 1565.
