ROCK ISLAND - Tayfield "Jackie" DeVriese, of Rock Island, died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at St. Anthony's Continuing Care Center, Rock Island. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rock Island. Burial will be in Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, with a wake service at 6 p.m. Additional visitation is 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Mr. DeVriese was employed 40 years at the former Rock Island Millworks. He retired in 1969. He was born Sept. 30, 1906, in Rock Island, to Francis and Elodie (Osterlinck) DeVriese. He married Mary J. Foley on June 20, 1931, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rock Island. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and American Association of Retired Persons. He had played semiprofessional baseball and softball for many years. Memorials may be made to the church or a favorite charity. Survivors include his wife; sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas M. and Anita DeVriese, Toddville, Iowa, and William F. and Sharon DeVriese, Rock Island; grandchildren, Kevin, Scott, Steve, Michael and Timothy DeVriese and Suzanne Rakestraw; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Irene Janssens, Rock Island. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
