DAVENPORT - Services for Elmer J. Hamann, Davenport, will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 3-6 p.m. Sunday and one hour before the service Monday at the church. Mr. Hamann died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Manor Care Health Services, Davenport. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is in charge of arrangements. He was a farmer in the Eldridge area for 36 years. He retired in 1972. In 1972, he became a loan officer at Central Trust and Savings in Eldridge for 10 years. He retired in 1982. He was born March 15, 1910, in Eldridge, Iowa, to Adolph and Emma (Meier) Hamann. He married Ruth F. Meyer on Dec. 16, 1936, in Davenport. Elmer was named Master Farmer in 1963. This honor came as a result of his early innovative farming practices which included installing the first milking parlor and bulk milk tank operation in the country, using terracing for soil conservation, investing his own corn drying bin and creating one of the first surface silos in the country. In 1940, he was involved with the National Corn Husking Contest and helped with the National Plowing Match. He helped organize the Scott County Farm Service Co. and served as president for 19 years. Elmer was an avid learner and interested in education. One of his greatest satisfactions came from his involvement in helping organize the North Scott Community School District and becoming the first board president. He served on the St. Paul Lutheran Church Council for 12 years, the board of directors of the Central Trust and Savings Bank, County Farm Bureau President, was active in Republican politics and chosen as a Presidential Elector in 1976, was a member of Kiwanis, was a charter member of the Quad-City Gyro Club and a member of the Knights of Pythias. He enjoyed woodworking and created numerous pieces of furniture for family members. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Davenport. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Jack Albrecht, Eldridge, Iowa, and Wynne and David Schafer, Davenport; son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Sandra Hamann, Greenville, S.C.; grandchildren, Sara and Bill Nygren, Malinda and Bill Hamann-Lee, Andy and Gail Albrecht and Lara and Chris Wannemacher; five great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Ted Baetke, Eldridge, Iowa; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred and Helen Hamann, Eldridge, Iowa, Walter and Marion Hamann, Davenport, and Calvin and Phyllis Hamann, Davenport. He was preceded in death by sisters, Elsie Kuhl and Rhonda Schmidt; and a brother, Albert.
