US Congressman. He was elected as a Whig to represent Maine's 1st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1841 to 1843. In 1869 he was appointed as the Kingdom of Hawaii's Minister to the United States and served 14 years in that capacity. He died in office in 1883 while attending a diplomatic reception at the White House in Washington, DC.
