Augusta Christina “Gustie” Kritsch Kirschner was born in Germany on December 8, 1873, to Karl F. “Charles” and Wilhelmina F. “Minnie” Kranzusch Kritsch. Gustie had three brothers: William, Paul, and Leo and three sisters: Minnie, Anna, and Ida. She came to the United States with her parents and siblings in April 1881. Gustie was a naturalized citizen, but never attended school. In November 1891, she married John Benjamin Kirschner, who was 11 years her senior. They had four children: Charles Fred “Charlie” Kirschner, Edward Francis Kirschner Sr., Arthur Kirschner, and Florence Marie Kirschner Smith. Arthur died as a young child in 1898. John and Gustie made their home on Patterson Street in Indianapolis, IN. After John’s death, Gustie moved to a small house on New Street where she lived with her brother, Leo Max “Linc” Kritsch. Gustie died from complications of a stroke under the care of her son, Edward.
