Ellowene Crees, the daughter of Thomas and Grace Wells Mardesen, was born 25 May 1908 on her parents' farm in Hamlin Township, Audubon County, Iowa. Her siblings were: Harvey, George, Ray, Thelma (married George Gregersen), and Maxine (married George Campbell) Mardesen. On 16 October 1921, Ellowene was baptized at the Exira Christian Church. She attended rural school then Exira High School, and graduated with the Class of 1928. She was active in girls' basketball along with her sisters.

Ellowene married Fred Crees on 26 August 1928. They lived in Exira most of their lives. Fred died in 1973 in an automobile accident.

Ellowene was privileged to serve for nearly 20 years as head cook in the Exira School system. After that, she was the cook for the Congregate Meals in Exira, and finally worked as the head cook at the Exira Care Center when it opened in 1975. She was known as an excellent cook who made certain that no one ever left her table hungry.

Ellowene was an active member of the Exira Christian Church. She taught sunday School, was a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship, a member of the Bible Study group and served in many other ways within the church. She enjoyed playing cards with numerous card clubs, and was a member of the Jolly 15 Club. She enjoyed watching collegiate sports. But most of all, she enjoyed her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Ellowene died at the Exira Care Center 22 August 2007. Preceding her in death were: her husband Fred; her infant son Thomas; her son Charles; her grandson Chuck Crees; her granddaughter Debbie Crees; her son-in-law John Hansen; her parents; her brothers and sisters: Harvey (Gwendolyn) Mardesen, George Mardesen, Ray Mardesen, Thelma (George) Gregersen, and Maxine (George) Campbell.

Survivors include her two daughters, Patricia Hansen of Audubon and Raydell (Robert) Wahlert of Walford, IA; her grandchildren: Cindy (Mark) Miller of Audubon; Mike (Pam) Hansen of Audubon; Joni (Doug) Griffin of Exira, IA; John (Robin) Wahlert of Urbandale, IA; Paul Wahlert and Friend Laurie Davis of Cedar Rapids, IA; Shari (Rion) Schwartz of Walford; Jan Thomson of Liberty, MO; and Mary Crees of Corning, IA; her great-grandchildren: Josh (Nicki) Klever; Mark (Rachael) Miller; Melissa (Brice) Lippert; Samantha Hansen and friend Luke Wheeler; Cody and Brady Griffin; Curtis Griffin and friend Stacy; Ashley and Amber Wahlert; Kristen and Abby Wahlert; Dylan Schwarz; Shane (Anita) Crees; Jason Crees; Zachary and Anna Thompson; her great-great-grandson Jens Miller. Also surviving are her step grandchildren: Jana (Brent) Knights, Rod (Theresa) Miller; and Mike (Linda) Miller; her step great-great-grandchildren: Meghan and Nathan Knights; Rachael, Jarrod and Alyssa Miller; Ross and Ben Miller; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
