ATHOL -- Donald G. Patriquin, 72, of 548 Intervale Ave., died Friday afternoon, Aug. 5, 2011, at home, following an illness.

Born on Dec. 25, 1938, in Gardner, he was a son of Robert and Beatrice (Boucher) Patriquin and grew up in Gardner prior to enlisting in the United States Army.

A majority of Donnie's military time was served in Germany both as a jump master and parachute rigger with the 82nd Airborne Division, where he was also a member of a newly formed skydiving team called Victory Parachute Club executing jumps as a hobby for spectators during his off time in the era when skydiving was an upcoming sport. He logged a total of 105 static jumps and 106 free falls some of which were logged right here at the Orange Airport.

After discharge from the military, Donnie's passion for auto racing started as a participant and continued as a lifelong fan of the sport.

Throughout his life he was always quick to help out with whatever task, project, or problem a family member or friend may have going on.

Donnie worked for many years as a truck driver and later a special police officer for the former Gardner State Hospital, then as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator for Northwoods Construction Company of Leominster. Donnie also held positions in the manufacturing sector for companies like Rodney Hunt Company of Orange, Digital of Westminster, and Packard Bell of California.

A member of the Athol-Orange Elks Lodge 1837, Donnie was also a member of the Orange Gun Club.

He enjoyed his time with family and friends, attending Air Shows, hunting and fishing, and watching the New England sports teams.

Survivors include his son Daniel Patriquin of Templeton; his brother Gerald Patriquin and his wife, Peggy, of Gardner; sister Joyce Flood and her husband Fred of Hubbardston; nephews Gerry Patriquin and his wife Lauree of Athol, and Jason Flood and his wife Christina of Ocala, Fla.; niece Brenda Letourneau of Athol; great-nephew Jason Patriquin and his girlfriend Robyn Suojanen of Athol; great-nieces Sarah Patriquin of Athol, Katelynne Patriquin of Athol, and Malissa Bean of Athol; and a great-great-nephew, Austin Bean of Athol.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Cynthia Patriquin.
