Actor. He performed in more than 130 films and TV series. He became known to world film audiences for his role in "Das Boot," as Captain Phillip Thompsen, in which he played a World War II German submarine captain who mocks both Adolf Hitler and the British. He played the alcoholic trumpeter Meyn in "The Tin Drum," by Volker Schlöndorff, an Oscar-winning adaptation of Gunter Grass' novel, and he also starred in "Wings of Desire," a surrealistic drama directed by Wim Wenders in 1987. He was also an important voice actor in German language for film dubbing as the version of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (2000), and also for several audio books. In 2000 he joined Gérard Depardieu, John Malkovich and Jeanne Moreau in a TV adaptation of "Les Misérables." He was awarded Germany's theatrical actor of the year honor in 1979 and again in 1999. He was married to actress Monika Hansen.
