June 5, 1914 - Humboldt Republican - Jane C. Combs Utley was born Nov. 12, 1834, in Boonville, New York. She was married to Joseph Utley Dec 16, 1858, to which union three children were born of whom Herbert C. Utley alone survives. Her husband died in 1881, after which she moved to Humboldt, Iowa, where she made her home.
In her younger years she united with the Baptist church, afterwards with the Methodist church, and later was one of the founders of the Christian Science church of Humboldt where she remained an active and faithful member till the time of her death.
She leaves one son, Herbert Utley and wife of Jacksonville, Florida, and one brother, Carlos Combs of Humboldt, who were present. After a short illness she passed peacefully away on the morning of May 30, 1914, aged 79 years, and was laid at rest beside her son Forest, in Union cemetery.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. H.D. Herr at the residence of Mr. Alex McLaughlin, and were attended by a large number of people from all the churches and from the town and surrounding community. The deceased was widely known and universally respected and for those who knew her most intimately, this respect deepened into the most ardent personal attachment, her serene and beautiful face being the index of an equally serene and beautiful character.
