Reno resident, Richard E. Spooner, well known as Dick, passed away September 17, 2010 at the age of 81.
Memorial Services will be held Saturday, September 25 at the Lighthouse Baptist Church, in Reno. He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Jessie Lucinda, also known as Cindy, and their three children, Diane, Terry and Ronald.
Richard was born in Hollywood, CA on October 4, 1928 to Henry Raymond & Hazel Leona Curry Spooner. At 17, he joined the US Army and served from 1946 to 1948 in Japan with the occupation troops. He attended San Luis Obispo College in California when he left the Army. He was in the Las Vegas Sheriff Mounted Posse. He belonged to the Reno Elks. He was an Elk for 55 years. He and his wife belonged to two motorhome clubs, the Silver Wheels and the GMC 49ers.
Dick had salvage yards over the years in El Monte, California, Henderson, Nevada, which he sold, and bought one in Reno. In 1968 he opened the first auto and truck salvage pool in Nevada, and also towed and transported vehicles into the pool for insurance companies and out to their buyers. He sold the salvage pool and transportation company in 2004. Recently he restored a 1957 GMC tow truck that he owned new in 1957.
Richard is also survived by his brother, Raymond; son-in-law, Steve Bailey; grand-children, Nicole, Jamie, Jessie, and stepgrandson, and his great grandchildren).
