Married to Margaret Anne Drake for 48 years. Proud career veteran of the United States Navy. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars; during the Korean War he was stationed in Okinawa for two years with the Marines as a medic. He served on the USS Vulcan (AR-5), a well-known Navy repair ship, from 1961 to 1966 while stationed at Norfolk, Virginia; he was shipped out to the Caribbean at the start of the Cuban Missile Crisis in November 1962, when Vulcan was sent to provide support to the Naval blockade. Three years later, in May 1965 he shipped out with the Vulcan to the Caribbean once again, as part of the "Dominican Intervention" by the United States.

Daddy loved fishing, woodworking, playing his guitar and mandolin, and puttering in the yard. He could drink and cuss like the sailor he was, but was always a gentleman in the presence of ladies. He was smart as a whip but didn't say a lot; however, when he did, it was usually worth it :). He knew just how many shots he could fire off at the armadillos digging up Mama's flower beds before the sheriff shined around. He could put a baby to sleep in under 3 minutes just by rubbing their nose. Children were scared of him and adored him all at the same time. He brought home more homeless kittens than my mother did.

Preceded in death by his parents, Emery Burks and Helen Griggs Burks, his first wife Nancy, and brothers Jerry, Emery Clark "Gabe," and Ronnie Lee "Pee Wee" Burks.

He is survived by his wife Margaret Anne; his sister Trudy; his son Anthony Scott by his first marriage; his son Bill Jr and daughters Karen and MaDora by his second marriage; 11 adoring grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Oh, and friends all over the place.
