US Congressman. Born in Carrollton, Illinois, he graduated from Amherst College Massachusetts in 1883, Union College of Law Chicago, Illinois, in 1885, was admitted to the bar in 1885 and commenced to practice law in Carrollton, Illinois. He was the master in chancery for Greene County, Illinois, (1887-95), when elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-eighth Congress and to the next eight succeeding Congresses, serving (1903-21). An unsuccessfully contested candidate, he engaged in agricultural pursuits. In 1923, he was again elected to the Sixty-eighth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses and served until his death one day before his 74th birthday in St. Louis, Missouri.
