WAR SOLDIER, DIES

cie Community, Commander
Of Kenesaw Post.

Joseph Hampton Steele, 88, vet-
eran of the civil war and a retired
farmer from the vicinity if Muncie,
died at the soldiers' home hospital
here at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday
morning after an illness of nine
months. He had been a patient at
Lake View hospital before being
taken to the soldiers' home.
Mr. Steele, former commander
of Kenesaw post, G. A. R., had
made his home in this city for 35
years, or since he retired from
active farm work. He had made
his home at 12 Corrinne street since
coming here.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs.
Linna Steele, six sons, William,
Chicago, Charles, Hartford, Mich.,
James, Gary, Ind., Francis, Lohr-
ville, Ia., Joseph, Hammond, Ind.,
and Theodore, Danville, and two
half-brothers, George, of Seattle,
Wash., and Burton, of Chicago.
The deceased was a member of
Olive Branch lodge, A.F. & A.M.,
the Danville Consistory, Low
Twelve and the G. A. R. He was
born April 7, 1845, at Sullivan,
Ind., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Blu-
ford Steele.
The body was taken in charge by
E. R. Pape. No plans have been
made for the funeral.

Joseph Hampton Steel(e) was born to Bluford Steele and Elvira Hampton. He first married Martha J. Bailey in March 1866 in Terre Haute, Indiana and divorced 1 year later. They had one child together. He then married Nancy Jane Arbogast on December 22, 1869 in Edgar County, Illinois. She is buried next to Joseph in the cemetery. Nancy was formerly married to Benjamin W.Thompson. His third and final marriage was to Lina Bell Harmon on June 22, 1901 in Covington, Fountain County, Indiana.

Military Record:
He enlisted into the 54th Regiment of Indiana Infantry on October 16, 1862 and mustered in on November 8, 1862 in Indianapolis, Indiana and was discharged November 23, 1863 in New Orleans, Louisiana for immediate re-enlistment into the 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery.
Joseph was mustered into the 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery on November 23, 1863 in New Orleans, Louisiana and was discharged January 10, 1866 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
