Mrs. Asenath Braham McCleary

Lawrence county's oldest pioneer citizen, Mrs. Asenath Braham McCleary, died at her home, 449 East Washington street, Sunday morning, January 9 from complications due to advanced age. Had she lived until March 18 she would have been 100 years of age.

Mrs. McCleary was the last direct link to Pennsylvania between the present and the War of 1812. Her father, Samuel Braham, served with Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry in that war. He had come to the United States as an infant of two years from the north of Ireland. His parents settled in what is now known as Lawrence county and Mrs. McCleary was born here. For a few years as a small girl she resided with her parents in Butler county but returned to this county to live after a few years residence in Butler.

Her husband, Samuel E. McCleary, preceded her in death many years ago.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Thomas G. McCleary of Pittsburgh, former superintendent of the Braddock, Pa., schools; three grandsons, Samuel E. McCleary of Emsworth, Pa., Charles J. McCleary of Pittsburgh and Sgt. Thomas G. McCleary, U. S. army. The following nieces and nephews survive: Luther Braham, Harrisville; Mrs. Lillie B. Young, Mercer; Judge S. B. Snyder, Council Bluffs, Ia.; Dr. William B. Washabaugh, Erie, Pa.; Mrs. J. R. Block, Coraopolis, Pa.; Mrs. A. M. Davis, Akeley, Minn.; Mrs. Loraine Shofield, Boulder, Col.; Leroy Beatty, Caifornia; and Mrs. Agnes Beatty Gillis, Buffalo, N.Y.; Judge W. Walter Braham of Lawrence county courts is a grand nephew.

Mrs. Cleary was a member of long standing of First Presbyterian church and was also a member for many years of the Women's Christian Temperance Union.

From 7 to 9 tonight and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 Tuesday afternoon and evening friends will be received in the Offutt funeral home on North Mercer street. Funeral services will be Wednesday afternoon, January 12 at 2 o'clock. Interment will be in Greenwood cemetery.
