Brother of Commodore Charles Stewart McCauley and Navy Purser Francis Gurney McCauley.

First U.S. diplomat accredited to Egypt; Commissioned as Consul General only and used the title Agent and Consul General with the acquiescence of the Department of State.
Appointed: August 14, 1848
Presentation of Credentials: March 17, 1849
Termination of Mission: Died at post October 24, 1852 (believed to be cholera)

He was transported with his family in U. S. Frigate Constitution to his post.

Spouse # 1: Sarah Yorke died after 3rd childbirth. 
Spouse # 2: Frances Ann Jones gave birth to his youngest child, Constitution Stewart McCauley at sea as they neared Cairo.
