Rites held for Fr. Aquinas Reding, OFM

Obernburg, N.Y. - A Mass of Christian Burial for Franciscan Father Aquinas Reding, 78, was held Jan. 8 at St. Bonaventure Church in Obernburg. He died Jan. 5. He was a Franciscan for 51 years and a priest for 46 years, serving in Croghan 1977-89.

Father Aquinas was born on Oct. 10, 1921 in Attica, N.Y. to Elmo and Loretta (nee Pety). He was baptized in St. Vincent's Church on the same day and named Paul Francis. He attended Alexander District schools, Alexander, N.Y., and St. Joseph Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y.(now closed).

He was received into the Franciscan Order on Aug. 12, 1947 and professed first vows on Aug. 13, 1948 in Paterson, N.J., by the Provincial, Fr. Bertrand Campbell, OFM. His philosophy studies were done at St. Stephen's, Croghan, N.Y. and St. Anthony's, Butler, N.J. and theology studies in Holy Name College, Washington, D.C. He made final vows in Paterson, N.J. on Sept. 17, 1951 before the Provincial, Fr. Thomas Plassman, OFM. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 12, 1953, by Archbishop (later Cardinal) Amleto C_______ the Apostolic Delegate, in the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C.

Fr Aquinas' assignments were to St. Francis Church, N.Y.C., as assistant and hospital chaplain from 1953-1957; Sr. Anthony's, Ashville, N.C., as assistant from 1958-58; missionary in Brazil from 1959-66;m St. Elizabeth's, Denver, Colo., as assistant and prison chaplain from 1966-77; St. Stephen's, Croghan, N.Y., as assistant from 1977-1989; Sacred Heart, East Rutherford, N.J., as parochial vicar from 1989-92; St. Bonaventure's, Paterson, N.J., as parochial vicar from 1992-99, then as senior associate friar at St. Mary's, Obernburg, N.Y., until his death.

Interment will follow in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, N.Y.

Father Aquinas is survived by three brothers, Edmund Reding, Richard Reding, his twin, and Robert Reding, all of Attica, NY; two sisters, Mary Beechler and Joan Waite, both of Attica, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
