NEWPORT NEWS - Michael Vernon Horner, Sr., 74, passed away on Saturday, September 14, 2013. He was born in Burlington, North Carolina on August 15th, 1939. Mike attended Newport News Apprentice School where he received the Homer L. Ferguson Scholarship to North Carolina State University. He graduated Summa Cum Laude in Electrical Engineering and received the Golden Chain Award. He retired from Northrop Grumman and was proud to be a Master Shipbuilder. Mike was a member of Warwick United Methodist Church, the May Club and Jaycees. He also enjoyed playing golf and was an avid supporter of his sons' athletics. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin E. Horner, Emily H. Horner and his daughter, Debbie Horner. Survivors include his loving wife, Lorraine LaCoy Horner; two sons, Michael Vernon Horner, Jr. and Nicholas Colby Horner and brother, Martin Eubanks Horner. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, September 19, 2013 at Altmeyer Funeral Home-Riverside Chapel, 7415 River Road, Newport News. Service will follow in the chapel at 6 p.m. Interment will be Saturday, September 21, 2013 in Pine Hill Cemetery, Burlington, N.C. Condolences to the family may be made at www.altmeyer.com.
