Obituary from The Bayard Advocate, Thursday 6/27/1912:
Another Early Settler Gone
Thursday June 20th at about 7 o'clock in the evening David Neal passed away. He had been very low for several days and the end was not unexpected. Attendants were compelled to keep him nearly constantly under the influence of opiates his suffering was so great.

Mr. Neal had been afflicted with kidney trouble for some forty years and for the past few years has been growing steadily worse and the past month was confined to his bed. Since the death of the wife and mother last November 4th the children who live close, C.D. and W.H. and Mrs. Mary Truax and their families have given constant and faithful care to their father and early in the spring Mrs. E.A. Neal came from Merlin, Oregon, later E.A. left his business and came to help in the care and be with their father in his declining days. Mrs. Knapp, the daughter in Indiana and her husband spent some time here after Mrs. Neal passed away but was unable to be here at the last on account of poor health.

This faithful loving care speaks of a life well spent, of parental teaching and childrens' loyal devotion. Mr. Neal's only sister, Mrs. Mary Pence of Grand Island, Neb. has also been with them a part of the time. Following is the obituary used at the church:

David Neal was born in Dayton, Ohio, August 21, 1833, died June 20, 1912, aged 78 years, 9 months, 29 days. He was the son Hanson and Charlotte Neal. Mr. Neal was married to Maria Weed in Noble Co. Indiana, December 30, 1853. To this union four children were born, Mary E., Sarah J., Zilla A. and Charles R., two of whom survive, Mary E. Truax and Zilla A. Knapp. Mrs. Neal died June 28, 1862. Mr. Neal was again married April 5, 1863 at Bloomfield Davis County, Iowa to Margaret Cammack. They moved to Guthrie County in 1863. To this union five children were born, Howard William, David Calvin, Samuel Alfred, Albert Elmer and Dora Agnes. William, Calvin
and Elmer still survive.

Brother Neal has endeavored to live a Christian life. For a number of years he has been a member of the Christian church and gave his support to it in different ways. The funeral was held at the Christian church Sunday at 1 p.m. under the auspices of the Masonic order, of which Mr. Neal was a member. Rev. Miller conducted the services. A large number of friends were present to pay their tribute of respect to the departed and sympathize with the relatives. Interment in Dodge cemetery.
