Cora "Jean" Merritt Jefcoat, 83, of Little Mountain, died peacefully surrounded by family on September 18, 2013 at Springfield Place, Newberry. A Memorial Service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday September 21, 2013 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Little Mountain. Visitation will follow in the Holy Trinity Life Center.
Jean was born at Moselle, MS on January 17, 1930. She was the youngest of 13 children of Shadrick Theodore and Annie Rush Merritt. After graduating from Moselle High School, she attended the University of Southern Mississippi.
On November 12, 1949, Jean married D.H. "Jeff" Jefcoat. As they moved around the country following Jeff's career path. Jean devoted her life to being a housewife and mother of her children. She was an avid reader, often reading multiple books at a time. In retirement, she greatly enjoyed some twenty years of traveling the United States with Jeff in their motorhome.
Survivors include her husband Jeff of Little Mountain; daughter Pam Holt of Hickory, NC; sons Mike Jefcoat (Joan) of Gardendale, AL, Doug Jefcoat (Jeanne) of Columbus, GA, and Sam Jefcoat (Pamela) of Little Mountain; granddaughters Amanda Holt Corey (George) of Westport, CT, Anna Jefcoat Summerlin (John) of Decatur, GA, Kathryn Holt of Charleston, SC, and Shelby Jefcoat, Jenna Hackaday and Sarah Hackaday all of Columbus, GA; grandsons Tyler Jefcoat (Emily) and Stewart Jefcoat (DeAnn) both of Athens, GA; greatgrandchildren Cora Leigh, Jacob and Maggie Jefcoat all of Athens, GA; a sister Cecile Merritt Camera of Westfield, NJ; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Jean's family doctor and friend for over 30 years Dr. Ford Bowers of Chapin Family Practice, and also to Dr. Michael Bernardo and the dedicated staffs of Springfield Place and Hospice Care Tri County for their love and care in Jean's final days.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Building Fund, PO Box 186, Little Mountain, SC 29075, or to another charity of one's choice.
