Born on her grandfather's farm near Huntsville, Ohio, Constance (as she preferred to be called) spent the first 7 years of her life at Wheelock, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) where her father was missionary, pastor and at one time superintendent of the Wheelock Academy for Choctaw girls and her mother and aunt had been teachers. Her father retired in 1893 and the little family moved to San Jose, California. She was a student at San Jose High School when the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 damaged much of the school. She was graduated from Stanford University in 1910, and attended San Jose Normal to get a teaching certificate which she used to teach for one year. She married Albert E. Caswell, Ph.D., and they had four children. She was active in church and in PEO.
