Inscription

A private in Co. K.16th Vt. Reg.
__
The soldier has stood on the battle plain
Where every step was over the slain
But the shell and ball all passed him by
And he came to his own lone home to die.
Twas hard to be numberd among the dead
Or ere he could hear his welcome said
But twas something to see his hills again
To be laid to rest near his own loved plain.
To think the friends of youth might weep
Oer the green turf of the soldier's sleep.
