From the Aurland Bygdebok: Martha's family birth name is given as "Bergkvam." her five brothers in Black Hammer used Berkvam and Berquam. Martha Hemri was born on the Berekvam gard, Flam parish, Aurland kommune, Sogn province, Norway, of parents Botolv Johannesen Berekvam 1779-1869 (Berekvam #68) and Ingeborg Torsteinsdtr. Melhus 1785-1862. Martha was married in 1841 in Aurland to Ole Trondsen Hemri #46c who was born on the Hemri gard, Naeroy-Bakka parish, Aurland, of parents Trond Nilsen Hemri 1770-1839 and Anna Olsdtr. Underdal 1773-1845.
While in Aurland, Ole and Martha Hemri lived on the Ramsoy gard in Naeroy where their two oldest sons, Trond and Botolv, were born. In 1845 they moved to Nordland province north of Trondheim, Norway, in pursuit of farm land that was available in the northern provinces. Three more of their children were born in Nordland: Ananias, Ingeborg, and Kari. Ole Trondsen Hemri died sometime after 1854 in Nordland. The two oldest sons emigrated from Aurland in 1859.
Martha and the three younger children emigrated to America sometime in the 1860's and in 1870 the entire family was found on Trond's North Black Hammer homestead in section 10.
Martha died August 29, 1894, in Black Hammer at the age of 78. She is buried in the Black Hammer Church Cemetery along with her father, Botolv Johannesen.
