Dr. Wayne Dehoney, 89, retired pastor of Walnut Street Baptist Church, Louisville, died November 15, 2007, at the Wayne Dehoney Health and Rehabilitation Center in Treyton Oak Towers, Louisville, Kentucky.

The eldest of 3 sons, Dr. Dehoney was born August 22, 1918, in New Raymer, Colorado, to Warren and Ruby Dehoney. He married Lealice Bishop of Madisonville, Kentucky, in 1944. She preceded him in death on October 23, 2007.

Survivors include three children: Rebecca (Mrs. Thomas) Richardson of Jackson, Mississippi, Katherine (Mrs. Thomas) Evitts of Clarksville, Indiana, and William Dehoney of Ft. Myers, Florida. Also surviving are grandchildren Morgan Richardson Kotlarczyk, Bradley Richardson, Mark Evitts, and Tonya Evitts Hillman, and two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Sydney Evitts. Another great-grandchild is expected in January.

Dr. Dehoney earned a B.A. degree from Vanderbilt University and a B.D. degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was awarded honorary degrees as Doctor of Divinity from Union University, Jackson, Tennessee, and Campbellsville College, Campbellsville, Kentucky and a Doctor of Laws from Atlanta Law School, Atlanta, Georgia. He pastored Walnut Street Baptist Church, First Baptist Church, Jackson, Tennessee, Central Park Baptist Church, Birmingham, Alabama, Immanuel Baptist Church, Paducah, Kentucky, First Baptist Church, Pineville, Kentucky, and First Baptist Church, Rogersville, Tennessee, as well as several student pastorates in Tennessee and Kentucky.

During his pastorate at Walnut Street from 1967-1985, the William H. Pettigrew Christian Activities Building and the Clara Nussbaum Childrens Building were erected. Baptist Towers was built, a television ministry started, and Treyton Oak Towers was established. He was active in community affairs, offering leadership to several community endeavors and boards. An active Rotarian, he was chaplain for the University of Louisville football team and was a member of several Louisville commissions and committees.

Dr. Dehoney was very active in Southern Baptist Convention ministries. He served on the Executive Boards of the Kentucky and Tennessee Baptist Conventions and twice was elected President of the Southern Baptist Convention, in 1965 and 1966. He was intensively involved with the Baptist World Alliance, serving this international Baptist organization in several capacities and on the Executive Committee. He was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and was active on the Board of Trustees of Boyce Bible School, holding the position of Senior Professor of Preaching and Evangelism at both institutions. In 2001, he received the Clarence Jordan Award from the Long Run Baptist Association, which recognizes an individual in the Louisville area whose life exemplifies practical application of the Gospel. As co-founder of Dehoney Travel during the past 40 years, he has assisted Christian pilgrims from around the world in visiting the lands of their faith. In 1998, Dr. Dehoney was awarded by the Israeli government the 50th anniversary Travel & Tourism award which was given to select partners who have helped build tourism to the Holy Land. He was a world traveler, visiting almost all continents, and led mission trips to Russia, Ukraine, Brazil, Africa, China, and several other nations. In 1992, he brought over 300 ministers and laypersons to Russia to work in Moscow churches during the Billy Graham crusade in that country.
