Motion Picture and Television Director. He will perhaps be best remembered for directing the cult classic picture "Vanishing Point" (1971). Born to parents of Armenian descent, he became interested in movies at an early age and enjoyed films of such legendary actors as Spencer Tracy and James Cagney. Following service with the United States Military during the Korean War, he returned home in 1952 with initial aspirations of studying in the medical field, however a class in screenwriting altered his career direction. While working as a reporter in Kansas City, he met Robert Altman who at the time was directing area theater plays. The pair found a mutual interest in regards to acting and after Altman embarked upon Hollywood during the mid 1950s to launched his directing career in television, Sarafian joined him there to serve as his assistant. After acquiring experience, he made a name for himself as a director and accumulated many credits on such popular TV series as "Lawman", "Ben Casey" and "Batman". He directed a 1963 episode from the classic series "The Twilight Zone" titled "Living Doll". Beginning in the late 1960s, he focused mainly on feature films and had efforts with "Run Wild, Run Free" (1969), "Fragment of Fear" (1970), "Lolly-Madonna XXX" (1973) and "The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing" (1973). The picture "Vanishing Point" became a popular film via drive-in theaters. During the 1980s, Sarafian began to experience acting rolls in both TV and films. His work became inspirational to a new generation of filmmakers among them Quentin Tarantino. He died of complications from pneumonia.
