In 1943 Chuck enlisted in the army. He was a rifleman in support of heavy artillery in the Battle of the Bulge. Chuck was a recipient of the Purple Heart because of injuries he sustained due to gunshot wounds in his left arm. He lost the use of that arm for his lifetime.
