U.S. Congressman. Completing studies at Hanover College, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1846 and commenced to practice law at Lexington, Indiana. He was clerk of the Indiana State House of Representatives in 1843, clerk in the United States Treasury Department at Washington, D.C., (1844-48) secretary of the Indiana State constitutional convention in 1850 and a member of the Indiana State House of Representatives, (1851-52). In 1853, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-third Congress and to the three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1861. On the 1880, Democratic election ticket, he was an unsuccessful candidate for Vice President of the United States. Living politics, he served on the Indianapolis Monument Commission in 1893 and author of several books. He died at age 77.
