Dr. Joseph A. Wytrwal, Ph.D., entered into eternal life on August 26, 2016, at the age of 91. Author, editor, administrator, and teacher, Dr. Wytrwal was born in Detroit on October 24, 1924. He received a Ph.B. (Bachelor's of Philosophy) and M.A. from the University of Detroit, a B.A. and M.Ed. from Wayne State University, and M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. He also studied at the University of Hawaii, New York University, and the University of Toledo.

Dr. Wytrwal was a principal at Wilson Middle School in Detroit, a member of the faculty and staff at the University of Detroit and Wayne State University, and a visiting scholar at Columbia University and the University of Warsaw. He also held the Coe Fellowship at the University of Wyoming.

Dr. Wytrwal was the author of many books, editor of the journal "Polish American Historical Association Bulletin," assistant editor of the journal "Polish American Studies," and columnist for the newspaper "Dziennik Polski." He was also a contributor to many historical, social, biographical, and literary journals in both America and Poland. He received the Heritage Award for his book "Poles in American History and Tradition."

Dr. Wytrwal was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Joseph and Nellie (nee Kadlof) Wytrwal, his dearest brother, Reverend Fr. Alexander Wytrwal, and his dear godson Dennis Suchyta.

Visitation 1-8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at Jarzembowski Funeral Home, 18957 W. Warren Ave. (at Artesian). Funeral service 10 a.m. Thursday, September 1, 2016 at the funeral home. Visitors may arrive beginning at 9 a.m. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery.
