Rosa (North) Walton was born to William "Old Billie" North and his first wife, Malissa Smith.

Her father was born in Bilsby Parish (Lincolnshire) England and at the age of 11 he emigrated with his parents to Ouebec, Canada. At the age of 20 he re-located to Attica (Lapeer) Michigan to begin farming on government owned land (his farm deed is signed by Martin VanBuren) that he worked for sixty-six years until his death. Her mother was from Bristol County, Michigan, the daughter of Daniel and Sally (Kimball) Smith.

Rosa's mother Malissa died very young (age 18). She had one brother (William) and 3 half-siblings (Emma, Julia and Lorenzo North) by her father's second marriage to Laura Babcock.

Rosa married Jonathan Trumball Walton, Jr. on 14 September 1861 Attica (Lapeer) Michigan and together they had 6 children.

o Anna M, born 9 April 1866
o William Herbert, born 15 August 1872
o Ethel May, born 1879
o Ray M., and his twin brother, Roy North, born 15 August 1882
