Russ graduated from Holdrege (NE.) High School with the class of 1957. He then pursued higher education, where he received his Ph.D. in genetics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and taught in the Biology Department at UW-Stout in Menomonie, Wisconsin for 35 years. Russell devoted more than 20 years of his career to genetic and molecular research in dark red kidney bean production, which continues to have an agricultural impact today. Teaching was his passion and he taught everywhere he went including: the classroom, apple orchard and bean field. Russ was a devoted athlete who played college football for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, skied the American Birkebeiner for 10 years and completed the Tinman Triathlon. He loved music and played the trombone for 29 years in the Ludington Guard Band. He also enjoyed traveling, reading and playing cards.
Russ was preceded in death by: parents and daughters, Dianna Lynn James and Jodi Lynn James.
Russ is survived by: wife, Kathryn James of Englewood, Florida; children: Jacqueline (Thomas) Evenson of Menomonie, Wisconsin, Julie James (Kevin Shoemaker) of Elk Mound, Wisconsin, John James of Blaine, Minnesota and Janelle (Kenny) Patenaude of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; grandchildren: Eric (Clare) Evenson, Matthew Evenson, Chandler James, Abirlan Turner, Logan, Ava, Ben and Taylor, James and Ella and Grant Patenaude; brother, Harry (Marion) James of Springfield, Missouri; sister, Delores (Robert) Schroeder of Lincoln, Nebraska and a host of family and friends.
Graveside services were at Prairie Home Cemetery, Holdrege, Nebraska.
