Marion was married first to a German official Franz von Rottenburg, a much older widower with several children by his first marriage. She bore him a daughter Frances and a son Phelps. Later when the marriage ended, Marion returned to the US and her maiden name. Thus her son ended up with the unlikely moniker of Phelps Phelps (buried in Arlington National Cemetery).

Marion married a second time to Theodore Peters, and was still married to him when she died of diabetic complications.

She is buried beneath the central altar in the Phelps Mausoleum.
