Son of the earliest Chicago pioneers he became VP of Armour & Co making a large fortune. Later made money from other companies and had a large estate called Arcady Farms and another in Santa Barbara, Ca designed by his son in law Ambrose Cramer that is in the National Register for historical sites. He was on most Chicago commissions and social organizations. Had a large art collection and a supporter of Chicago opera. Also well known as a yachtsman.
He was called upon to entertain a great many world leaders and public figures who visited Chicago for a great many years.
