Graveside services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Reardan cemetery for George R. Carstens, 77, who died Aug. 15 at his Spokane home. Born Jan. 23, 1936, in Tucson, Ariz., to Arthur and Ann Carstens, he attended school in Reardan and upon graduation attended EWU and WSU. He served in the U.S. Army as an honor guard member at both the White House and Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. In 1958 he married Lynne Jorgensen and returned to the family farm northeast of Reardan. During his years farming he served on the Reardan Grain Growers board and was an active member of the Spokane County Conservation District. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. In 1993 he moved to Spokane to care for his widowed father. Besides his parents, his only brother, Lamont, preceded him in death. He leaves a son, Todd (Julie) Carstens, on the family farm in Reardan; a daughter Melanie Carstens of Spokane; a longtime friend, Peggy Lang of Spokane; and two grandchildren, Noelle Carstens of Reardan and Matt (Kayla) Carstens of Sisters, Ore.
