Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in born in Tynan, Ireland, he served as a Private in the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment, British Army. At Lucknow, India, September 26, 1857, when a group of his comrades was besieged in a house in the city, Private McManus with another Private went forward to assist. Private McManus stayed outside the house until he himself was wounded and under cover of a pillar kept firing on the sepoys which prevented them rushing the house. He also fought off attackers and took a wounded Captain out of a dhooly and carried him into the house for protection. Private McManus later achieved the rank of Sergeant and was killed in action at Allahabad, India. For his courage at Lucknow, India, September 26, 1857, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.
