He fought at the April 1862 Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee, and then was promoted to Major on right after the engagement. He served at this rank through the next two years as his regiment would see action in Kentucky and Tennessee. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on April 2, 1864, he led the 71st Ohio at the December 15, 1864 Battle of Nashville, Tennessee, where he was wounded. He commanded the unit through the rest of the war, received a commission of Colonel that was not confirmed, and was honorably mustered out on November 30, 1865. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war".
