Ingebrigt Arnold Apold was born in municipality of Arna, Haus (now a borough of Bergen) in the county of Hordaland, Norway. His parents were John I. Apold and Aasa F. Eitrheim, both of Odda, Hordaland. He went to a horticultural school, and later worked as a gardener in Gaugua, Haus until he traveled to the United States in 1927. He continued to work as a gardener in the USA and eventual had his own nursery. He volunteered for the 99th Infantry Battalion (Separate), a unit made up of Norwegians and Norwegian-Americans. Private First Class Apold was killed in action on 27 Sept 1944 in Belgium. He was initially buried in Lahklaar, Belgium. In 1949, his remains were returned to Arna, Norway for reburial.
