He was born April 30, 1937 in Burgaw, the son of the late Sterling S. and Lorna Louise Cottle Barnhill. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Christy Carver; sister, Blanche Thompson; brother, David Barnhill; and step-children, Carolyn Hardy and Michael Monroe.
Olen is survived by his son, David Olen Tracy Barnhill (Cindy); grandchildren, Josh Barnhill, Kenny Barnhill and James Carver (Stephanie Garner); step-children, Linda Moore (Johnny) and Terry Monroe (Donita); several step-grandchildren; great granddaughter, Olivia; sister, Edna B. Woodcock (A. C.); special friends, Faye Marley and Jack Edwards: and many extended family, all who loved Barney.
Olen was a graduate of Wallace High School Class of 1955. He served his country honorably in the US Army National Guard and Olen attended and completed NCO Leadership Class No. 3 training with the NC Military Academy at Ft. Bragg in 1962. He was an active member of Victory Christian Fellowship.
Barney was dedicated to his family and was a good and caring friend to many. He was an enthusiastic NASCAR fan and in years past enjoyed the races on the race track in Richlands. Through many illnesses Barney's faith in Jesus Christ never wavered and he treasured the fellowship with his church family. Barney had a kind heart, a warm smile and a feisty sense of humor that could brighten any rainy day. Barney blessed the lives of many and leaves a legacy of love and hope and kindness.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 16, 2013 at Victory Christian Fellowship with Pastor Allen McKeithan and Pastor Rocky Myrick officiating. Burial will follow in Haw Bluff Baptist Church Cemetery, Kelly NC. Casketbearers will be James Carver, Jack Edwards, Roy Marley, Jay King, Wayne Page and James Faircloth.
The family will receive friends on Monday at the church at 10:00 a.m. until hour of the service.
