Meta Campbell was born in Franklin county MS in Meadville. She married Robert Thompson, a railroad employee who died in his late twenties from a tragic work related accident.
Shortly afterwards Meta went to beauty school in New York City and opened a salon in Hotel Markham in Gulfport, MS. She traveled often to NY checking on the latest hairstyles and fashions and was able to offer up to the minute advice to her clientele. She also did a local radio show advertising her salon and keeping her business in the public eye.
After the death of her husband she became very close to her mother-in-law, who was a widow herself, the two even living together at one point.
A lady of many talents, Meta posessed a lovely singing voice and sang many solos in her church choir at First Baptist in Gulfport. She was also very adept at entertaining which she did often in her home in Long Beach and was also an avid bridge player. During these years she also taught Charm School at Gulf Park College, an elite school for young women, in Long Beach.
Civic club work called and Meta soon found herself the president of the Gulfport Business and Womens Club. She remained very active in this endeavor for many years serving on most all committees.
From 1943 on she was married to Scott Hanville, a lumber executive, until his death in 1978. Grown step-children came with the marriage which was very enjoyable for all.
Meta was the daughter of Josiah C Campbell and Alice Theodosia "Docia" Oglesby Campbell Redell
