Obit - Sophia Michalski, age 97, of Edgewood Vista, East Grand Forks and formerly of Minto, passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2004 at Grand Forks, ND.
Sophia was born on May 11, 1907, the daughter of Wincenty "Vincent" Gerszewski (1872-1949) and Frances Riski (1875-1935), the 10th of 14 children. She grew up on a farm near Ardoch, ND, and attended Ardoch Twp Dist #11. She married Alex Michalski on November 7, 1927 at Warsaw, ND. They lived and farmed near Oslo, MN until moving to Minto in 1971, where Alex managed the Peavey Elevator for 31 years until his death in 1962 at the age of 58. Sophia, loved by all, cooked in the Minto Schools for 20 years and was active in the Good Cheer Homemakers Club, the Minto Whist Club and the Golden Age Senior Center. She was a member of the Degree of Honor Fraternal Organization, serving as State President for a term. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society in Minto. She is survived by one sister, Ameliana Spale, Grafton; daughters: Elsie Klitz, Manfield Center, CT; Doris (Dave) Fertig, Hallock, MN; Marlene Jorgenson, Devils Lake, ND; Vicki (Dean) Flanders, Minto; and Jackie Michalski, Littleton, CO; son Ken (Mary), Tehachapi, CA; daughter-in-law Lillian Case, Lisbon, ND; 20 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild. Sophia was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Jerome, daughter Frances, son-in-law Lew Jorgenson, eight brothers and four sisters. Mass of Christian Burial: Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Minto, ND on Saturday, October 30th, at 10:30 a.m. Interment: Sacred Heart Church Cemetery, Minto.
