DONGOLA -- Michael A. Pass, 55, of Herrin, formerly of Dongola, died at 10:10 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Mr. Pass was born Oct. 29, 1950, in Anna, the son of the late Francis Pass Sr. and Mary Lee (Corzine) Pass. He married Deborah Shaffer on Dec. 17, 1976, and she survives him.

Mr. Pass had been a drafting teacher at Herrin High School since 1984. He was a member of the Herrin Education Association, the Illinois Education Association, the National Education Association, the Association of Career and Technical Education as a life member, the Illinois Drafting Education Association, the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, and past GWRRA Chapter Q director, the American Motorcycle Association and the Illinois Sheriffs Association.

In 1993, Mr. Pass was presented the R. Tim Phillip Award for Excellence in Drafting Education as the outstanding drafting teacher in Illinois. His accomplishments as a drafting teacher at Herrin High School were phenomenal. In the history of the John A. Logan College Regional Drafting Competition, Mr. Pass' teams won first place 14 consecutive years, including this past year. During that stretch, his students also won at least one, and often both, of the two John A. Logan College drafting scholarships awarded annually at the competition.

Over the years, 109 of Mr. Pass' students qualified for the state drafting competition, and he produced eight state champions. Every year, he worried that Herrin High School's run of regional drafting titles would end; every year, his students brought home another first-place trophy. Mr. Pass enjoyed his teaching career and was a motorcycle enthusiast, enjoying long motorcycle trips with his wife, Deborah.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah, of Herrin; two brothers, Francis Pass and wife, Patricia, of Energy and Richard Pass, of Herrin; one sister, Camilla (Pass) and husband, Steve Wisecarver, of Herrin; mother-in-law, Elsie Shaffer, of Dongola, and brother-in-law, Larry Shaffer and wife, Pat, of Dongola; nieces, nephews, and cousins, Stephanie and Todd Greer and children, of Cape Girardeau, John and Amanda Pass and children of Herrin, Alex and Ben Pass, of Herrin, Abigail and Sarah Wisecarver, of Herrin, and Jonathan and Heather Shaffer and children, of Dongola; aunts and uncles, Joan Ledbetter and children, of Chicago, Bill Corzine, of Anna, Janice and Donald Keller, of Metropolis, and children and Tom and Vicki Keller and children, of Tamms.

Services for Michael Pass will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday in Crain Funeral Home in Dongola, with Todd Greer officiating. Interment will follow in American Legion Cemetery in Dongola. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Michael Pass Drafting Scholarship and will be accepted at the funeral home.
