Matilda Elizabeth West Cantrell Cox was born May 1837 in Tennessee to William Y. 'Horsefly' West and Nancy Willey Perry. Around 1856, she married Richard Cantrell. They had 3 children, all born in Missouri; Nancy M b. 1857; Cindrilla b. 1859 and Mary Etta b. 1861. She later married Thomas J. Cox, August 5, 1886 and they moved to Oklahoma (Indian Territory) and sometime before 1898 to Colorado. They lived in Maybell, Colorado with her son-in-law and daughter, Winfield and Cindrilla Trimble and in her later years, lived with her husband Thomas on a ranch near Cattle Creek, Garfield County, Colorado. There is no record of her death year. We assume she is buried next to her daughter Cindrilla as there is an unmarked grave there and next to her are the graves of her husband Thomas J. Cox and his second wife Jeanette. We are guessing her death date was between 1915-1917 as Thomas was married to Jeanette in 1920. No positive date of death has been found but her husband Thomas J. Cox was married to Jeanetta Frances Blue in the 1920 census. (They married in 1913) Thomas and Matilda were married and living together in the 1900 & 1910 censuses. So we chose 1911 as one other researcher felt they thought this was the date, too. Please feel free to correct us if you have something to substantiate her death.
